Committee meetings and political group's week, Brussels

EU Enlargement Strategy

The day after the Commission adopts its annual strategy document on EU expansion, Commissioner Olli Rehn will discuss the issue with the Foreign Affairs Committee.

EP/Ukraine

EP President Jerzy Buzek will meet Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko (Thursday). A press point will be held after the meeting.

Thursday Ebs 3 - 17.30 CET

Financial crisis

The new Special Committee on the Financial and Economic Crisis will meet to elect its chair and vice-chairs (Thursday; the meeting will be webstreamed).

EU/United Nations

The Foreign Affairs Committee will hear from Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy UN Secretary General (Tuesday EbS1  11:30-11:35 CET), while the Human Rights Subcommittee will meet the President of the UN Human Rights Council, Alex Van Meeuwen (Thursday EbS2 14:45-14:50 CET). President Buzek will also be meeting Dr Migiro (Monday EbS 4 19:00 - 19:05 CET) and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay (Wednesday Ebs 2 - 14.30 CET).

President's activities

Mr Buzek will also meet EU Foreign Policy High Representative Javier Solana (Wednesday Ebs3 -17.30 CET) and will address both the European Innovation Summit (Tuesday Ebs+ LIVE 09.30 CET and Tuesday Ebs 1 - 11.35 CET) and the European Jewish Congress (Wednesday).  Finally, Mr Buzek will make an official visit to Austria (Friday).

EP- Spain

The President will also meet with Diego Lopez Garrido, Spanish Secretary of State of the EU (Tuesday 17:00 Presidents cabinet).

EP Prize for journalism

The winners of the European Parliament Prize for Journalism 2009 will receive their awards from President Buzek.

Preparing for the plenary

The political groups will devote most of the week to preparations for the 19-22 October plenary session.  The main items on the agenda include the 2010 EU budget and debates on climate change and the forthcoming EU summit.  It is also planned to hold the first Question Hour with the Commission President, which is set to become a regular feature.

Pre-session briefing

The updated session agenda will be presented at the regular press briefing with the EP Press Service and political group spokespeople (Friday 11am Ebs LIVE 11.00 - 11.30 CET Anna Politkovskaya room, PHS 0A050).

Press Conference

Ebs will cover the press conference on enhancing Europe's innovation performance for a sustainable future.

Eurinfo magazine

Next week's Eurinfo magazine, on the earthquake in Italy, will be broadcast on EbS on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 20:40 CET and repeated at 20:48 CET - please check EbS website for description and shotlist.
